A quite brilliant article which in my opinion accurately reflects all that is wrong with small business sector. I would like to add some of my own thoughts, but John has captured them in a much better way than I ever could :-)

Paul, what did you say was in your pipe again?!

Really interesting question, nay THE question that has puzzled minds down the ages. Who am I?

I've read a little on these subjects so none of this is original or even provable in a court of law, but what I now know (not believe - I'll come back to this important point) is that we're all walking around thinking that we do know who we are 'I'm Paul Dean' or 'I'm Simon Cowell' (perish the thought!), but don't.

I'll explain. Remember that seminal movie 'The Matrix'? Astonishing effects (even now 11 years later) cool actors, esoteric storyline.

How do they dream these things up? The fact is that the 'story' of someone living a life they thought was real then suddenly 'waking up' isn't actually a story. It's how life actually is.

No I don't mean Neo is about to appear and pull some bullet time number in front of you, but that we're all in effect walking about in a dream version of reality. The dream is created by our minds when it makes up versions of reality that seem very very real to us but are just 'versions' of reality.

Think of it like this. Ever met someone at a networking event for the first time and listened to what they have to say and realised they're totally deluding themselves - and wondered why they don't see it themselves? Well the uncomfortable truth is that that’s not just them; it's everyone in one form or another (you and I included!).

So to come back to your question Paul of 'where do these memories reside' which is another way for saying 'what is our core identity', its not in our neurons, or mind for want of a better word. It's in our consciousness which is a different place to our mind (I know, its like disappearing down the rabbit hole!).

Mind is the source of our 'dream' - our skewed version of reality. The reality that's cut off from everyone else, nature. It’s selfish.
Consciousness is our core true identity. Think of the difference between your opinion of something, say a political party, and your experience of seeing your newborn baby for the first time.

Opinion, you could also say 'belief' (which is mainly made up of dead, past experience) retains that 'dead' quality when you stop and look at it. It is about denying the now or what is and trying to force this extinct dead thing to be 'real'.
Contrast that with Experience - because you're not filtering what 'is' but directly experiencing it it has a vivid, vibrant quality, always renewing, always 'live'.

Therefore your 'mind' in a sense is in 'your' head, where as you - your true identity is indivisible from the universe and everything in it, because that 'feeling' you get when you see your newborn is EXACTLY the same one I get. It’s not MINE.
That's why every experience we've ever had is accessible, because this universal consciousness is like a well we all are either fully in or dip into.

There are ways of going through life, I am told, that are totally in the now and therefore always totally authentic. These people are 'enlightened' spiritually. I think everyone has had flashes of this state but most of us think its fluke, something impossible to be harnesses (which is correct, as its the opposite of control etc).

Obvious really. (!!).

I had to have a quick look and just read that neurons can't be regenerated, which explains ageing and loss of function.

Memory doesn't exist within a physical cell, which in the case of the brain is the billions of neurons. It exists as connections between neurons. These change over time but some memories last a lifetime. And I'm sure many more still exist but become difficult to access as you mentioned above.

It is amazing isn't it how sometimes old memories are triggered, whether by music, a smell or taste. Even without recreational stimulants :-)

I have it on good authority that we are about to witness the roll out of a national service that on paper is going to be quite attractive. All it involves is throwing enough money at it and all your social media woes will be taken care of by an offshore office where they have a penchant for curry and the staff don't mind working for less than a cappuccino each day.

It's the future and personally I just cannot see any downside to it at all, in fact jumping on the bandwagon I have just outsourced my face to face networking. I am just too busy to be bothering with relationship building you see.

Have a look at what my outsourced solution got up to >> http://www.4networking.biz/forum/5/76115.htm
